and i’d argue that you can grow up with a similar idea even if your parents should have parted ways long before they did.

“If you have a good relationship with your parents, you grow up with the idea that love is very simple.”

Actually, I’d argue that if your parents have a very good relationship, you grow up with the idea that love is simple. The major example in my life is of two people who have been madly, almost embarrassingly in love for thirty-odd years. As a consequence, that’s how I think love should be: consistent, enduring, and worth fighting (with each other) for.

  1. we will be food critics at some point in our lives. and get paid for it.
  2. i get unreasonably happy hearing french in this place - a table of quebecois behind us at dinner 2 nights ago, parisian ladies at the souvenir shops. we switched to french with the parisian best day agent (with whom we booked a snorkeling excursion); she seemed pleased.
  3. one of my favourite moments thus far: being subject to an ear-ful of “i want to fuck you now” as a 60-something year old rounded the corner up the stairs after her husband, her sheepishly apologising with “oh! excuse me!” to which i countered with “have a wonderful night madame.”

wishlist.

for those who have asked (in particular, family), here is a wishlist (that will be continually updated).

for me:

  1. rectangular sterling silver earrings in meetalls etsy shop.
  2. fat: an appreciation of a misunderstood ingredient, with recipes. by jennifer mclagan.
  3. gin.
  4. film. a roll or two or three. i’m going to find uses for my lovely x-700 that’s sadly collecting dust.

for us:

  1. a waterstone. specifically this one! 250/1000 grit combination, this is much more competatively priced than the henckels twin sharpener. our knives are way too dull for it to be safe in the kitchen.
  2. a rasp for zesting and grating cheese. i get the feeling that lee valley will become a favourite soon. and i haven’t even actually set foot in the store yet!
  3. coffee/espresso. the boy mused the other day that we splurge on coffee. which is true, and to be fair, in line with our regular $ allocation to food. we discovered kicking horse, and love their kootenay crossing (a medium blend) - many fantastic americanos have been pulled in the AM. although we found kick ass to be too acidic, we’d love to try their other roasts too! also can’t go wrong with illy beans.
  4. a knockbox (it’s the thing used espresso grounds get “knocked” into. you’ll probably be familiar with the commercial ones at cafes everywhere. we are on the prowl - will post when we find something to our liking (because we’re picky like that. very.)
  5. a coffee grinder. don’t have a wide enough knowledge base to select one yet; again, we’ll post something more specific when we find something to our liking (again, because we’re very picky).
  6. kitchen hand soap. we’ve gone through a bottle of coriander & olive oil, and have just finished the last of our sanguinelli orange & fennel hand soap from fruits and passion. courtesy of my aunt on previous festive occasions, maybe she’ll have a refill in store for us this year! (by the way, as far as their body products go: i’m really not a fan of their melon line).
  7. toilet paper. i’m serious! one of the most practical things ever (on that vein: tissue paper too). none of the shitty 1-ply stuff either. white swan, charmin, etc. PC makes a pretty competitive “ultra” (and their 2 ply isn’t bad either) - just stay away from their green line. i may be environmentally conscious, but i also dislike taking the skin off my bum. and i’ve planted enough toilet paper (“shit ticket”) forests that i feel justified in this stance.
  8. definitely not for now, but when we have a “real place”, whatever that means: hicat. if i were a cat, i’d want most of the stuff featured on moderncat. i suppose when we have 4-figure leather couches and 7-piece sets, we can spoil serif too! and hopefully by then, hicat will be shipping outside of the UK.
